Win

A rodeo cowboy lives a life of constant pain. Knees, wrists, shoulders, hips, back, it all hurts, all the time. Only the degrees change. Some days I can barely climb up into a saddle, my legs are so stiff and achy. Other days, raising an arm above my head is damn near impossible.

But the morning after consummating my marriage to Morgan McClain, I feel like a kid again.

Everything is loose and smooth. I slip out of bed and pad into the bathroom on legs that feel sixteen again. Once inside, I twist at the waist and am amazed at how good I feel.

That woman – my wife – is pure magic.

My wife.

If I wasn’t before convinced that I needed to figure out a way to keep her forever, I sure as hell am now.

I call down for steak and eggs; I need a big breakfast after exerting myself in the ring and the bedroom, and I’d fallen asleep before having a chance to eat dinner.

Since I don’t know what Morgan prefers, I have room service bring an assortment of a little bit of everything.

I wake her up with soft kisses and put a hotel robe on her before leading her out to a living room with plates of food on virtually every surface.

“I’m eating out on the balcony,” I tell her. “Show me what you want, and I’ll set you up.”

She chooses French toast, bacon, and a bowl of fresh, mixed fruit. I splurge on a waffle to go with my protein.

We eat and laugh and flirt our way through the meal, arranging our next few days.

I need to get serious about the rodeo finals. As extraordinary as my day one performance was, I can’t count on catching lightning in a bottle twice.

Now, I’ve got more reasons than ever to make sure I win.

And make sure I have the money to buy that ranch I’ve been thinking about.

Morgan isn’t sure how to break the news about our nuptials to her family, so we decide to keep it on the down-low until the rodeo ends. She’ll take Tug’s hat and the money she owes her friends and go hang out with them, reconnect with family, and enjoy the rodeo the way she originally intended to. I’ll rope and ride and wrestle and do what I came to do, what my name predestined me to do.

“By Friday night, I’ll need to see you again, though,” I say, already wondering how I’m going to make it that long. “Hell, you’re still here with me and I miss you already, just talking about being apart. Let’s have that dinner date I owe you.”

“Okay,” she agrees. “Hair down, dress, the whole shebang?”

“Yes, ma’am. Take whatever cash you need, buy the best dress in town, get your hair done, shoes, whatever you need. I’ll grab a suit—”

“And a shave,” she reminds me, tracing a finger across my stubbled jaw and sending shivers down my spine.

“That might have to wait until after Saturday night,” I explain. “Bad juju to shave during the rodeo.
